The key step for the future

From 6 months of age, a new stage begins in dietary development of your baby, which must be both comprehensive and balanced. He begins to develop habits which will stay with him for the rest of his life.

At this time, your baby will be introduced to purees of meat, fish, eggs, cheese and yogurt; elements that are essential components of his future diet. He will still need to take about 500ml of milk daily, in addition to his purees.

At this stage, they begin to experiment with interaction with us and the world around them. For most babies, teeth begin to appear, so the weaning process can begin. They can begin to experiment with more solid food.

CEREALS CONTAINING GLUTEN

From 6 months of age, baby food can start to contain gluten since his digestive system has developed a greater tolerance. These cereals are wheat, oats and barley that can be taken as baby food with milk or in products like biscuits, semolina, pasta and small pieces of bread….mixed with vegetables or fruit. In this range of purees from MI MENÚ, we have produced flavours like Fruit with Biscuits, which are ideal for between meal snacks.

MEAT

This is the moment to introduce elements of meat in their diet. This is usually mixed with vegetables, rice and pasta and will be lunch for many of our babies. At this time, babies will start to eat four or five times a day. Try to include milk in at least three of these.

Meat will provide them with essential amino acids and proteins, vital for their development. Minerals like zinc and iron, also found in meat, will prevent anaemia and vitamin B12 will help the formation of red blood cells. We recommend starting with white skinless meat, such as chicken, turkey and rabbit because these provide protein with a lower fat and cholesterol content. Also the flavour of this meat is blander than beef, lamb or pork and thus is easier to accept.

Did you know that rabbit is a lean meat with very little fat and a high iron content? It is an ideal meat for youngsters. From 7 to 8 months of age, you can begin with the red meats, such as beef, horse, lamb and pork, always avoiding the fattier cuts and combining them with vegetables, pasta and rice in order to tone down the stronger flavour. Did you know that horse meat is the red meat with the highest iron concentration with the least amount of fat?
