From 6 months we can start to observe more autonomy from your baby. You will observe small changes to a more upright position of the head, the appearance of teeth and more attention being paid to their food. If this is true, it is good time to introduce a spoon.
- Make sure the spoon is adequate, flexible and soft. The ideal is silicon so as not to damage his mouth.
- Go slowly, feeding with a spoon could take longer. Be patient. Don’t offer large quantities of food which could choke him or make him swallow too much air.
- Maintain a correct position, use a highchair and keep the baby in an upright position. This will help the baby swallow better and teach him the correct position to maintain when he is eating.
- Gradually increase the quantity of solid food. Start with liquids on a spoon and slowly move from denser liquids into solids.
- Sit at the table with them, try to adapt your mealtime to theirs, in order to create a relaxing meal time experience and not one of rejection.
If they still reject the spoon, do not insist, just wait a few days and try again: in the end you will be successful and your baby will learn to use a spoon. Every child is different.
